Rock Salt (mineral halite)
Hydrogenous sedimentary rock.
This large halite (NaCl) crystal came from a rock salt mine in Silirian-age strata in Finger Lake region of New York. A thick layer of rock salt deposited in an ancient restricted marine seaway basin has been historically mined since the Civil War, and are reported as among the deepest mines in North America. |
